BRONX, N.Y. – Junior Cosme Jubera came away victorious in the singles Flight A consolation bracket to lead the Queens College men's tennis team, as the Knights concluded the Fordham Four-in-the-Fall tournament on Sunday. Queens faced Division I competitors Fordham University, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Wagner College.
In the singles Flight A, Jubera took down Wagner's Dale Sandy, 8-5, while senior Gabriel Mendez edged out Fordham's Fabian Mauritzson in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-2), to set up a Jubera-Mendez consolation final. It was Jubera coming out on top in the finals, defeating Mendez in an 8-3 decision.
In another matchup of Knights, freshman Hugo Evangelista de Andrade defeated teammate Stanislas Bedrune, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), in the Flight D semifinals. Evangelista then bowed out in the finals to Fairleigh Dickinson's Billy Bourne, 6-1, 6-2.
After winning on day one, senior Lucas Martinez fell in three sets to Andris Gudins of Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3, in the Flight B semifinals. Senior Roman Laga, who also won on day one, bowed out in three sets in the Flight C semifinals, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, to Wagner's Charlton Boyd.
Also in Flight C, Camilo Arias won by default to reach the consolation finals, but fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Miki Nobuzawa, 8-5. Sophomore Nick Volos also earned an 8-4 win over Fordham's Cameron Posillico to reach the Flight D consolation finals before falling to Fordham's Gabriel Mashaal, 8-3.
The Knights wrap up their fall schedule and will look to defend their East Coast Conference title in the spring.
