BRONX, N.Y. – The Queens College men's tennis team partook in the opening day of the Fordham Four-in-the-Fall tournament on Saturday held at Fordham University. The Knights were joined by three Division I opponents in host Fordham, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Wagner College.
Senior Lucas Martinez picked up a win in Flight B of the singles tournament, 8-3, over Fordham's Lutwin de Macar. Meanwhile, classmate Roman Laga notched an 8-5 win over Wagner's Ilya Kneppelhout in Flight C play.
In Flight D, freshman Hugo Evangelista de Andrade and junior Stanislas Bedrune advanced in the winner's bracket. Evangelista downed Fordham's Gabriel Mashaal, 8-4, before taking down Fordham's Steven Duka, 8-6. After a first-round bye, Bedrune claimed an 8-6 win over Wagner's Allen Wang. Senior Miguel Bendito also earned an 8-5 win over Fordham's Joseph Kavaloski before falling to Wagner's Patricio Pons, 8-4.
In doubles, Laga and junior Cosme Jubera competed in Flight A, picking up a 7-5 win over Wagner's Eric Poland and Dale Sandy before bowing out to Gudins and Adam Chan of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-4. In Flight B, Evangelista and sophomore Nick Volos claimed a 7-5 win over Harris Durkovic and Cameron Posillico of Fordham before falling to Wagner's Boyd and Wang. Bedrune and junior Richard Sec had a bye and then defeated Fordham's Kavaloski and Duka, 6-1, but then dropped a 6-3 decision to Boyd and Wang.
Queens will conclude play at Fordham on Sunday, Oct. 15. Martinez will look to keep it going in Flight B at 10 a.m., when he takes on Fairleigh Dickinson's Andris Gudins, while Laga will challenge Wagner's Charlton Boyd in Flight C at 11:30 a.m. Meanwhile, Evangelista and Bedrune will square off in the Flight D winner's bracket at 1 p.m. Queens will also be competing in the consolation bracket of all four singles flights.
