FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The senior duo of Lucas Martinez and Gabriel Mendez reached the doubles semifinals, as the Queens College men's tennis team concluded play at the ITA East Regional Championships on Sunday. Senior Roman Laga and junior Cosme Jubera both reached the quarterfinals of the singles main draw as well.
Martinez and Mendez, the No. 6 seed in the doubles draw, took down the 14th-seeded tandem of George Samander and Brendan McCarthy from Bentley University, 8-4. The duo then faced the challenge of taking on the top seed, Concordia's Alessandro Evangelisti and Eymeric Chevalier, falling just short in a tight 8-6 decision.
Laga cruised past Chestnut Hill's Antoine Gautier, 6-0, 6-1, but then faced top-seeded Matej Selecky of NYIT, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 match in the quarterfinals. Jubera knocked off fourth-seeded Rok Bozic of the University of the District of Columbia in an impressive 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 victory before falling in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-4, to Concordia's Alessandro Evangelisti, the No. 8 seed.
