Four from Men’s Tennis Still Alive at ITA East Regionals

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Four members of the Queens College men's tennis team advanced to the third day of competition by coming away victorious on day two of the ITA East Regional Championships on Saturday. Senior Roman Laga and junior Cosme Jubera advanced to the round of 16 in the singles main draw, while seniors Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez moved to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw. 

Martinez and Mendez, the sixth seed in the doubles draw, notched two victories on Saturday to advance, 8-1 and then 8-6. Laga moved on to the round of 16 with a pair of victories, winning 6-3, 6-0 before taking down 14th-seeded Frank Vega, 7-5, 6-1. Jubera picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win, and then defeated Arias, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the round of 16.

Also in doubles, Jubera and Laga earned an 8-1 win in the second round, but dropped a 9-8 (9-7) heartbreaker in the third round. Juniors Stanislas Bedrune and Richard Sec dropped an 8-5 decision in the second round, while the duos of senior Miguel Bendito and junior Camilo Arias as well as sophomore Nick Volos and freshman Hugo Evangelista de Andrade both suffered 9-7 defeats in round two.

Arias had notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over 16th-seeded Brendan McCarthy before bowing out to Jubera. Volos notched a 6-2, 6-0 win, but dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision. Sec notched a 6-3, 6-3 win to start the day, but then fell in the next round, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Jose Zurro claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win before taking the No. 4 seed to three sets in a 5-7, 6-2, 10-2 defeat. Martinez picked up a 7-6, 6-0 win, but then fell, 7-6, 6-4, to 12th-seeded Rares Ispas. Mendez dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 decision in three sets.

Martinez and Mendez will take on the 14-seeded McCarthy and George Samander in the doubles quarterfinals Sunday. Laga will face Chesnut Hill's Antoine Gautier, while Jubera will take on fourth-seeded Rok Bozic of District of Columbia.
