Men's Tennis Strong on First Day of ITA Regionals

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Queens College men's tennis team opened up its 2017-18 season at the ITA East Regional Championships on Friday. It was a successful first day of competition, with four individuals and four doubles teams advancing to the second day.

In the singles qualifier, junior Jose Zurro notched an 8-4 win, while classmate Stanislas Bedrune notched an 8-2 win, as both advanced. Sophomore Nick Volos picked up 8-0 and 8-3 victories, and junior Camilo Arias claimed a walkover and an 8-1 win to also advance to day two.

All four of the Knights' doubles teams competing on Friday advanced with first-round victories. The sixth-seeded duo of seniors Lucas Martinez and Gabriel Mendez earned an 8-4 win, while Bedrune and junior Richard Sec notched an 8-2 win. Arias and senior Miguel Bendito notched an 8-4 victory, and Volos and freshman Hugo Evangelista de Andrade claimed an 8-3 win.

Zurro, Bedrune, Volos and Arias will join ninth-seeded Mendez, 10th-seeded Sec, Martinez, senior Roman Laga, and junior Cosme Jubera in the singles main draw on Saturday. Meanwhile, the four doubles teams advancing will join the third-seeded tandem of Jubera and Laga, who earned a first-round bye, on day two of the doubles main draw.
