Queens College Mourns the Loss of Alan Landes

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Alan Landes, a member of the Queens College Hall of Fame and longtime men's tennis coach, has passed after a courageous battle against Glioblastoma, a very aggressive form of brain cancer.

Landes, who studied and taught at Queens, coached the Knights' men's tennis team for 27 years and was recently inducted into the Queens College Athletics Hall of Fame as the first member of the Class of 2017. Landes and his classmates will be honored on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the annual Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Harbor Links Golf Club in Port Washington, N.Y.

"Alan's passing is devastating," expressed Queens College Assistant Vice President/Athletics Director China Jude. "I hope that his family is at peace knowing that inducting him into the 2017 Athletics Hall of Fame was our way of celebrating the long lasting and positive impact that he made with his students and student-athletes. This was a deserving recognition for a wonderful husband, father, coach, and man. He will be missed by all."

Landes coached the Knights to 342 victories during his time at Queens. While at the helm, the Knights earned six NCAA tournament bids and reached the round of 32 in both 2005 and 2006. He led the program to six conference titles before Queens joined the N.Y.C.A.C. in 1993. That year, Queens captured the conference's inaugural men's tennis crown, while Landes garnered N.Y.C.A.C. Coach of the Year honors. He later won Eastern Tennis Association Coach of the Year in 2003 and was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Coach of the Year in 2004.

After stepping down as tennis coach in 2007, Landes became the director of the Queens College Indoor Tennis Center, as well as the athletics academic advisor. He continued in these positions until his health limited his work schedule in 2011.

A memorial service for Alan will be held on Monday, June 12, at 9 a.m. at 50 Riverside Blvd., Manhattan. For information about the Shiva, please contact carolynspector@gmail.com.
