ORLANDO, Fla. – In a heated battle that came right down to the finish, the Queens College men's tennis team defeated Grand Valley State, 5-4, on Thursday. Queens is now 2-0 to start the spring season.
The Knights' victories came at first and second doubles, as well as first, fourth and sixth singles. Queens took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as Sharvill Nawghre and Roman Laga partnered up for an 8-3 win at top doubles to get on the board first. Jui Mao and Cosme Jubera gave the Knights another doubles win in the No. 2 spot with an 8-6 victory, while the Lakers took third doubles, 8-5.
In singles, Richard Sec fought for a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win in the No. 4 slot, while Cosme Jubera added Queens' fourth win of the day, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 spot. Grand Valley took second and third singles, and after a long three-set fight from Laga, the Lakers took fifth singles.
It came down to the top flight in singles action between Mao and Zach Phillips to decide the match. Phillips took the first set, 7-5, but Mao fought back to claim the second set, 7-6 (3), and the third and deciding set, 6-4, to give the Knights the win.
Queens continues its stay in Orlando with a match against Florida Southern on Friday, March 10, at 3 p.m.
