No. 25 Men's Tennis Battles Before Falling in NCAA Round of 16 Match-Up vs. No. 1 Armstrong
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 25th-ranked Queens College men's tennis team fought extremely hard through all three doubles matches Wednesday afternoon at Top Gun Tennis Academy, but came up just short in falling 5-0 to No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State University, in a NCAA Division II Championships Round of 16 match.
Head coach Craig Schwartz's Knights (20-4), who advanced to their fourth-consecutive Round of 16 and completed their second-straight 20-win season, finished all three doubles matches within one or two games of the top-ranked Pirates (27-0). The 16th-ranked doubles tandem of senior Attila Toth (Budapest, Hungary) and junior Nikolaj Wulff (Munich, Germany) went to a tiebreaker in their match against top-ranked Mikk Irdoja and Georgi Rumenov, before falling 9-8 (7-4). Seniors Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) and Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) fell to 17th-ranked Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia 9-7, while seniors Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) and Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) dropped an 8-6 decision to Edualdo Bonet and Matus Mydla.
The defeat marks the end of five storied QC careers: Toth, Medrano, Smith, Ewels and Andrade all participated in their last respective college tennis matches, but not before putting forth an exceptional effort against the top-ranked team in the nation.
