QC punches their return ticket to the Sweet Sixteen

Queens College punched their return ticket to the Sweet Sixteen with a 5-2 victory over Bentley College in the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis East Region #2 Final on Friday afternoon. James Preston put the finishing touches on the win by defeating Lucas Wever at second singles, 6-4, 6-0.

With the win QC advances to the finals in Altamonte Springs, Florida, hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College, May 12-15.

QC will face Valdosta State on May 12th in their first match of the Championship Tournament.

Only a rally by Bentley’s first doubles team of Alec Spycher and Zach Tuckman prevented the Knights from sweeping the doubles matches. Spycher and Tuckman dug an early 7-4 hole against QC’s David Burstein and Jesse Smith but recovered to win 9-7.  The other two contests were also tight as both went  tiebreakers with Queens College prevailing in each. The tandem of Patryk Polus and Fabio Minami beat Bentley’s Lorenzo Cava and Victor Suski 9-8 (3) while the duo of Preston and Danilo Hiraoka bested Lucas Wever and Rodrigo Ribeiro 9-8 (4) to give QC a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles competition.

Cava got BU even with a win 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles but the Knights responded by taking third singles (Burstein over Spycher), and fourth singles (Minami over Suski) before Preston closed out the match  to give Queens College the East Region #2 title for the second consecutive year.
