Swimming and Diving Celebrates Seniors, Splits Dual Meet with SUNY Maritime

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2018) - The Queens College swimming and diving teams concluded their home season on Wednesday (Jan. 31) by hosting the Privateers of SUNY Maritime at the newly-renovated QC Aquatics Center in Flushing. The Knights were victorious in the women's meet, 105-79, but Maritime took the men's meet by a 156-28 score.

The Knights were victorious in eight of the events on the night, kicking things off with a spectacular showing in the 400-yard medley relay. The 'A' squad of Gabriela Almeida, Anna Lee, senior Katie Waszkiewicz and Jennifer Arana swam an impressive time of 4:31.23 to defeat Maritime by nearly 25 seconds (4:56.05). QC continued its run with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle race with Megan Dawes clocking a winning time of 11:52.70 in the marathon event as Michaela Raphael (13:25.61) finished in second place. Almeida won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:11.58 with Amanda Giordano in the runner-up position by clocking a time of 2:18.08 for the Knights. The next event was the 50-yard freestyle and senior Nicole Weinsheimer blew away her opponents in a time of 27.76 seconds as senior Rebecca Tepp finished in second place (31.67s). Chung (2:23.45) and Dawes (2:29.00) went 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley while Arana (1:02.29) and Raphael (1:09.99) went 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly. Chung cinched the victory for the Knights with a 58.62-second swim in the 100-yard freestyle event with QC closing the contest in a dominant performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The battallion of Chung, Raphael, Dawes and Lee won in a time of 1:52.27 beating Maritime by fifteen seconds (2:07.90).

Senior Thomas Soregaroli had several strong performances for the Knights in the meet against the Privateers. Soregaroli finished third in the men's 50-free (25.14s), second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.66) and first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.35). Meanwhile, senior Eric Yanez also competed hard and clocked a time of 29.03 seconds in the 50-free; Nihaal Shameem took second place in the 100-free (58.66s) and the 100-fly (1:16.39).

The Knights will next compete at the Metropolitan Conference Championships from Feb. 16-18 in New Brunswick, N.J.
