OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2018) - Romario Hulea's two goals in a span of 48 seconds proved to be the difference as the Queens College men's soccer team held off LIU Post for nearly 70 minutes of action to claim a 2-1 victory over the Pioneers on Wednesday (Sept. 26).
The game---which was moved to President's Stadium on the campus of NYIT due to unplayable conditions in Brookville---was chippy from the start as a hard challenge in the penalty area by Queens (4-3-1, 2-1 ECC) led to an LIU Post (5-2, 2-1 ECC) shot from the spot. Lukas Ostermann beat Michael Bolvin for his league-leading ninth goal of the season and Queens was down a goal and forced to play catch-up. Hulea and Cristian Villalta tested Pioneers keeper Oliver Hessner Hansen mere minutes later with shots, but the two would combine to grab the equalizer. Villalta dribbled the ball through the Pioneers' normally stoic and staunch defense before laying the ball off to Hulea for the strike and the tying marker in the 19th minute. Following a kick-off by LIU Post, Hulea once again found himself with the ball and was able to toe one past Hessner Hansen to stun the green and gold and give Queens an emphatic 2-1 lead. From there, neither team got a good shot on net as Ostermann pushed one high over the bar as Vittorio Argeri missed to the left not long afterwards. QC's lone other chance in the first half came as the clock wound down, with Konstantine Mendrinos having his effort blocked.
The insurance marker nearly came for the Knights in the 51st minute with Saufyane Ilbuodo being stoned by Hessner Hansen, while consecutive attempts from Andras Breuer and Kevin Quituizaca in the 60th were also parried away. Ostermann claimed two attempts in the 68th and 72nd minutes to tie the score but Bolvin was up to the task each time. The pace grew more frenetic in the final ten minutes of play with LIU Post's Yohance Alexander finding himself stuffed by Bolvin on a header attempt in the 82nd minute. Following another shot by Ilbuodo that was saved, the Pioneers had a free kick for their last good effort to knot up the score but Ostermann was denied on a header in the 87th minute as Bolvin iced the game for the Knights.
Queens outshot their conference foes by a 15-10 margin with Bolvin grabbing four saves to earn the huge 'W'. Hessner Hansen made eight saves in net for LIU Post as Ostermann had a match-high six shots in the losing effort.
The Knights will look to stay high on their successes as Mercy comes into Flushing on Saturday (Sept. 26) for a 3:30 p.m. tilt with Queens.
