WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – The Queens College men's soccer team was picked seventh in the East Coast Conference (ECC) Men's Soccer Preseason Poll on Thursday. The poll is voted upon by the league's head coaches, and Queens garnered 40 points overall.
Two-time defending ECC Champion LIU Post, ranked seventh in the nation, was the unanimous choice for first place, claiming 100 points and all 10 first-place votes. NYIT and Molloy were second and third, respectively, while St. Thomas Aquinas and Mercy filled out the top five. Ahead of Queens in sixth was District of Columbia, and Bridgeport, Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen rounded out the remainder of the poll.
The Knights got off to a hot start last season, going 3-0-2 over their first five games before entering ECC play. Queens ultimately ended up 6-7-4 overall and 3-4-2 in the conference, just missing out on an ECC tournament bid. Defensively, the Knights were strong with a 1.55 goals-against average, while the squad scored 1.53 goals per contest on offense.
With first-year head coach Frank Vertullo taking over the reins, the Knights bring back four of their top six scorers from a season ago, while adding a bevy of talented newcomers. All-ECC Second Team selection András Breuer returns after leading the squad with 20 points on seven goals and six assists last season. Sophomore Emgi Gousse, who tallied 14 points in 2016, also returns along with seniors Daniel Saint Louis and Brian Belfont.
Queens opens its 2017 campaign on Friday, Sept. 1, at St. Michael's at 3 p.m. and then hosts its home opener against Holy Family the following day at 1 p.m. The Knights begin ECC play at home against Molloy on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m.
