Playoff Bound Knights beat Mercy, 3-2

Playoff bound Queens College defeated visiting Mercy College, 3-2, in a game originally scheduled for Wednesday at Mercy. The Knights' playoff ticket had been punched 24 hours earlier when NYIT was beaten by Molloy.

Edwin Angel scored his first goal of the season at 14:10 to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Frank Alesci was robbed by Mercy goalkeeper Martin Walsh (12 saves) and, on the resulting corner kick, found Angel with a cross in the box which Angel headed home.

The score would remain this way until 3:39 into the second half when the Akinyode Dele ripped a shot past Walsh to put the Knights up by two goals. QC's cushion grew to three when Mikel Gjoni, fresh off of the bench, took a pass from Mujibullah Mashriqi and beat Walsh from the top of the box for his first goal of 2009.

Gjopni's goal turned out to be the game winner because Mercy struck twice in a span of 10:23 to make it a 3-2 game. At 76:39, Artiz Artoni fed Daniel Iamiceli, who beat Ivan Salame to break QC's shutout. Salame had replace Julio Gaston Rodriguez between the pipes for QC in the 68th minute. Then, with just under three minutes remaining, Rory Rosten headed home a pass from Gianfranco Bastone to pull Mercy within a goal. However, this is as close as Mercy would get with QC holding on for their 11th victory of the 2009 campaign.

Please note: Saturday's game at Philadelphia University has been cancelled.
