Crosdale Catches Fire, Lifts Men's Basketball to 67-62 Win over LIU Post on Saturday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2018)Tyrese Crosdale hit six three-pointers and pulled the Queens College men's basketball team from the jaws of defeat, as the Knights picked up a 67-62 win over LIU Post on Saturday (Dec. 8) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The Knights (1-9, 1-1 ECC) got off to a fast start as Shomari Redd scored on a lay-up right off the opening tip. Queens led by a 4-0 score after an Evan Goldberg baby hook in the paint but LIU Post (0-6, 0-2 ECC) answered back with a three-pointer from Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor. The sophomore would hit two free throws to put the Pioneers ahead by a 5-4 margin with three minutes gone by in the frame and lay-ups from Jackson Jordan and Kendell Ogilvie put the visitors ahead by a 9-4 score. Queens retook the lead at the mid-point of the half on the second of consecutive three-pointers from Crosdale but Ortiz-Traylor scored five unanswered to give LIU Post the lead back at 21-17 with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Knights would tie the score the rest of the way but not take a lead before halftime as Wayne Li's lay-up with five seconds remaining sent Queens into the locker room down by a 31-29 score.
Ortiz-Traylor hit two straight three-pointers to open the second half as part of an 8-0 run to give LIU Post its largest lead of the contest at 39-29 with six minutes played in the period. Crosdale would score five straight points for the Knights, but LIU Post regained a ten-point edge with ten minutes remaining. The 49-39 lead that the Pioneers held was sliced in half by another Crosdale spurt of five unanswered points, but Ortiz-Traylor hit a jumper just past the mid-point of the half to keep the visitors ahead by seven points. A lay-up by Li followed by five straight points from Dwayne Henry, Jr. brought the Knights level at 48-all with less than seven minutes left in the game. Ortiz-Traylor hit another contested jumper but Elijah Bovell's three-pointer gave Queens the 51-50 lead with six minutes to play in regulation. The Knights would hold onto the lead the rest of the way with Crosdale and Bovell leading the charge from beyond the arc; despite two long-distance threes from Seth Goumba, free throws would ice the win for Queens.
Crosdale had 15 of his team-high 24 points in the second half, finishing the contest with six rebounds and two assists. Bovell had 15 points off the bench, hitting 6-of-9 from the floor and knocking down three three-pointers. Henry added nine points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals in the win and Evan Goldberg totaled seven points, five rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Ortiz-Traylor led all scorers with 30 points, adding eight rebounds and four blocks for the Pioneers. Kendell Ogilvie finished with ten points for LIU Post.
The Knights will head on the road on Wednesday (Dec. 12) for a 7:30 p.m. showcase at Victory Gymnasium in Dobbs Ferry as the squad takes on Mercy College in an East Coast Conference match-up.
