FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2018) – Issac Grant's two big buckets late in the second half solidified an exemplary performance as the Queens College men's basketball team fought off LIU Post for a 69-66 upset win on Saturday (Feb. 10) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Tyrone Hall scored the first five points for Queens (7-14, 5-9 ECC) as the Knights opened up a 7-2 lead in the first four minutes of play versus LIU Post (9-14, 7-6 ECC). Keenan Gorski knocked down a three-pointer with 15:21 to play in the half that gave QC a 10-6 lead and Tyrese Crosdale followed with another three-ball to give QC its largest lead of the half at 13-6. LIU Post was quick to come back as Hunter Powell came off the bench to begin an assault on the score-sheet; Powell finished the half with 12 points on a 6-for-6 shooting performance from the field and his first basket was the catalyst for the Pioneers to tie the score at 15-all with nine minutes played in the half. Queens jumped back in front and held a 26-19 lead following a Grant three-point play with 6:39 remaining in the first half. The pendulum swung back in favor of the visitors as LIU Post grabbed its first lead at 29-28 when Aary Bibens knocked down a jumper with under four minutes to play. A jumper by Powell gave the Pioneers a 33-31 lead, but Hall and Grant ended the half with four points as Queens went into the locker room up by a 35-33 score.
Bibens scored the first points of the second half for the Pioneers to tie the game, a theme that continued to trend throughout much of the second half of the thrilling contest. Simon Green hit a three-pointer and Jordan Curtis knocked in a lay-up to give QC a 48-42 lead with six minutes gone by in the half. Later in the frame, Dwayne Henry hit a big three-pointer that brought the Knights' to a 51-44 lead with eleven minutes remaining in regulation, but the Pioneers continued to find their way back into the contest. Jared Rivers scored on a trifecta as LIU Post came within a point at 54-53 with less than eight minutes left in the game, and the visitors ended up taking a one-point lead after Austin Kennedy hit a three with exactly seven minutes to go. With under five minutes remaining in regulation, Grant hit consecutive jumpers to give Queens a 63-61 lead that the Knights would not relinquish.
Grant led QC with 17 points on 70% (7-10) field-goal shooting with five rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Green and Hall added 13 and 11, respectively. Rivers led LIU Post with close to a triple-double (20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists) while McLeggan and Powell added 15 and 12 for the Pioneers.
Queens will travel to Roberts Wesleyan on Friday (Feb. 16) for an 8 p.m. showdown with Roberts Wesleyan at the Voller Athletic Center.
