WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 27, 2018) – The Queens College men's basketball team rallied back from a five-point halftime deficit but could not overtake the lead as the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia beat the clock and the Knights in a 63-60 contest on Saturday (Jan. 27) at the UDC Sports Complex.
Queens (5-12, 3-7 ECC) led 6-2 in the first four minutes of action after Tyrone Hall and Elijah Bovell connected on three-pointers to send the Knights off and running. The next four minutes, however, belonged to UDC (3-16, 2-9 ECC) as the Firebirds scored eleven unanswered points with a Kevin Cox three-pointer giving the hosts a 13-6 lead with just over six minutes gone by in the first half. The Knights played catch-up for the rest of the half, not getting closer than two points on three different occasions: an Issac Grant free throw with 5:59 remaining (21-19 UDC), a Dwayne Henry jumper ninety seconds later (23-21 UDC) and a Bovell lay-up less than one minute after that (UDC 25-23). The Firebirds ended the half on a 6-2 run from the free throw line to enter the locker room up 30-25 on Queens.
The hosts opened the second half with five straight points on a three from Danny Shand and a jumper by Khalil Jackson in the first ninety seconds of play. Queens responded with five points by Hall and a lay-up from Simon Green as the Knights cut the deficit to three points at 35-32 but UDC continued to keep the Knights at bay. A Traveon Butler lay-up from a pass by Shand gave the Firebirds a 42-37 lead with six minutes played in the half. UDC built its lead back up to eight on a three-pointer by Paul Eromosele with 13:08 to play in regulation. Keenan Gorski answered with a three for Queens thirty seconds later which started a run of threes by both teams as Jackson and Hall traded trebles; Hall knocked down a trifecta with eleven minutes to play as the Knights were down by just two points at 48-46.
Free throws by Gorski with nine-and-a-half minutes remaining brought the Knights within a point at 51-50, but UDC went on a 6-0 run to claim a seven-point lead with seven minutes remaining. QC rallied back again with Grant hitting a lay-up to bring the Knights within a point again at 61-60 with 1:47 left in the game but Queens could not find the go-ahead bucket. A Butler lay-up gave UDC a three-point lead in the closing seconds of the contest, and a Grant three-pointer as time expired would not go.
Hall led the Knights with 14 points as Grant collected 11 points and nine rebounds. Green, Gorski and Bovell each added eight points for Queens with the Knights shooting 38% (23-60) from the floor in the loss. Leading the way for UDC was Shand who had a game-high 16 points with six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jackson added 15 points with four rebounds and three blocks as Butler had 12 points and seven rebounds. Cox added eight points and eight boards for the Firebirds in the win.
Queens will next play on the road on Tuesday (Jan. 30) up in Sparkill against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College.
