FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night, as Molloy College halted the Knights for a 77-64 win in East Coast Conference (ECC) action at Fitzgerald Gym. The Knights fall to 11-9 on the year and 8-5 in conference play, dropping to sixth in the ECC, while the Lions (12-9, 8-4 ECC) move past the Knights and into a tie for third place in the league standings.
Senior Tyree White led the Knights with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and senior Kyheim Chaplin added 11 points on the bench. Senior Diego Maldonado scored 10 points for Queens, while senior Malcolm Moore had a game-high nine rebounds.
ECC leading scorer Charlie Marquardt scored a game-high 18 points for the Lions, while Jaylen Morris (16), Curtis Jenkins (14) and Mike Guzzardi (12) also reached double-figure points. Molloy shot it more efficiently than Queens, making 52.9 percent overall and 50 percent from three-point territory, while Queens shot 47.2 percent overall and 30 percent from deep. The Lions also held a 32-27 rebounding advantage and outscored the Knights 36-28 in the paint.
Molloy led for most of the first half and took the lead for good with 5:55 remaining in the opening half. Queens took a 6-4 lead early on behind threes from Maldonado and senior Marquis Roberts before Marquardt tied it back up 4:16 into the game, ending the Knights' only lead of the game. The Knights hung in at 20-20 with 6:13 to go after a triple by junior Tyrone Hall, but a Marquardt three put the Lions ahead for good, 23-20.
The Lions would take a 10-point lead with just seconds remaining, but junior Simon Green hit a deep three on a last-second heave before the halftime buzzer sounded to bring the score to 38-31. It was all Lions in the second half, however, as Molloy led by as much as 21 midway through the second half en route to the 13-point victory.
Next up for Queens will be a visit to Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday, Feb. 8, for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
