Knights edged in final seconds, 80-79

Steve Martin's two free throws with 8.9 seconds left in the game were the difference as the University of Bridgeport edged Queens College, 80-79, in Flushing on Saturday night. Freshman Edil Lacayo led the Knights with 20 points.

The Knights broke open a tight first half with a 13-1 run capped by a Khaleef Allicott three pointer with 1:55 left to take a 40-29 lead en route at a 44-33 halftime advantage. Bridgeport fought back to take a 55-54 lead with 10:40 left in the game on a Jermaine Washington basket.

UB's lead grew as large as five points with 1:49 remaining but QC rallied to knot the game at 78 - the ninth tie score of the half - on two free throws by Terrell Simmons. Martin then converted two from the line with 8.9 seconds left but Allicott drew a foul with two seconds left and went to the line with a chance to send the game to overtime. Allicott made the first but missed the second and the Knights fell one point short, 80-79.

Teairez Stennis of UB led all scorers with 29 points. Martin Singleton had 15 points and nine boards while Allicott added 16 points and nine assists for QC.
