Peggy Gioia’s own successful competitive swimming career
in AAU, high school, college, and later master’s swimming,
led directly to her interest in coaching and officiating swimming
and diving both on the high school and college level. Prior to
coming to Queens College, Peggy taught swimming as a Red Cross
Water Safety Instructor; was a NAGWS, MSOA, NYSOGS certified
swimming official on the high school and college levels; conducted
clinics for coaches for the NYC GBPSAL interscholastic swimming
program; and was head coach of the Andrew Jackson H.S. varsity
swimming team. In her first year at Andrew Jackson H.S. she turned
a team comprised of mainly novice swimmers into a competitive
program that in a short time became a N.Y.C. P.S.A.L. divisional
winner. At Queens College, Peggy’s swimming teams were highly
successful on the conference and regional levels.
A member of the Queens College Athletics Department since 1977,
Peggy initially served in a part time capacity as women’s
varsity swimming coach, recreational swimming instructor and
academic counselor. In 1984 she was hired full time as Assistant
Director of Athletics. She currently serves as the Senior Woman
Administrator/Associate Director of Athletics at Queens
College.
During her tenure at Queens College, Peggy was responsible for
instituting an academic advisement program for the Athletics
Department’s varsity athletes. This program has helped the
College’s varsity athletes achieve a higher level of academic
success, and resulted in higher retention and graduation rates.
On an administrative level, Peggy’s responsibilities include
supervision of the institution’s women’s varsity teams;
scheduling varsity contests and making travel arrangements for all
men’s and women’s varsity teams; and academic
advisement. As a resource person for student-athletes and coaches
alike she works closely with the College’s Bursar, Registrar
and Financial Aid Offices. She also completes and reviews all
gender equity surveys and reports to ensure that Queens College is
in Title IX compliance. As part of these duties Peggy serves as a
member of the College’s Sports Allocation Board and Committee
on Athletic Policy which governs Athletics at Queens College. On an
annual basis, she plans and coordinates the varsity athletics
sports awards dinner as well as a graduation reception to honor the
achievements of Queens College student-athletes.
Peggy earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Columbia
University and a Master’s degree in Physical Education from
Adelphi University. She resides in Queens, New York.
