Aleksandr Ulanovskiy has been with the Queens College fencing program since 2001. Under his guidance, the Knights sent a school-record eight individuals to the 2011 NCAA Regional Championship – including then-sophomore Haley Ward – who placed 10th in the foil competition at the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association (NIWFA) championships.
The Ukranian native has been active as a competitor and coach in the fencing community for many years, including a victory in the 40-plus division of the 2004 USA Summer National Championships. Ulanovskiy was a coach with the Ukraine national team from 1994-97, aiding the squad to a third-place showing at the junior world championships in France in 1995. Prior to arriving at Queens, he lifted the South Orange (N.J.) High School team to a 2000 state championship as head coach.
Ulanovskiy is a veteran math teacher at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, N.J. He is married to Inna Ulanovskiy, and the couple resides in Brooklyn, N.Y. They have one grown child, Vladimir (24).
Aleksandr Ulanovskiy resurrected the Queens College Women's fencing program in 2001. His hard work came to fruition in 2010 when seven of his fencers qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
He had previously coached in Italy from 1998-99 where his team finished third in the national championships. Before his coaching stint in Italy, Aleksandr worked with the Ukraine national team from 1994-1997. In 1995 his team finished third in the World Junior Championships in France.
Individually, Aleksandr captured first place in the USSR Championships in 1984. He also finished first in the Ukraine Championship from 1986-1988 as well as the USA Summer National Championship in 2004.
