CALDWELL, N.J. (Mar. 29, 2018) - Andrew Navarez cleared the bases with a second-inning double and Kevin Kochen struck out nine batters in relief as the Queens College baseball team triumphed in a 5-2 contest against Caldwell University on Thursday (Mar. 29) at the Kiwanis Oval.
Queens (9-10) opened the scoring with a run in the first inning on Caldwell (0-16) starter Zach Endersby as Kevin Kolesar singled to open the game and scored when Jonathan Temenak reached on an error in left field. The Knights broke the game open in the top of the second inning, loading the bases on singles by Matthew Stepnoski and Ron Linsalato surrounding Paulino Harrington reaching on a hit by pitch. Endersby got two outs before Navarez cracked a double to the left-center field gap, and the dust cleared with Navarez on second and the Knights up 4-0.
Caldwell scored two runs in the bottom of the third, chasing Knights starter Adam Abreu after just two and two-thirds innings of pitching before Kochen came in and pitched emphatically well. The true freshman got the final out of the third inning and then pitched the final six innings of one-hit ball with three walks and the aforementioned nine strikeouts to earn his first career collegiate victory.
Queens scored its final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kolesar.
Stepnoski had three of the Knights' ten hits while Louis Antos collected another two-hit game for QC. Linsalato, Kolesar, Navarez, Nick Luciano and Brian Shannon had the other hits for Queens in the victory.
The Knights will open a four-game series with Molloy on Friday (Mar. 30) as the Knights return to ECC play with the Lions. First pitch from Uniondale is set for 3:30 p.m.
