Baseball Ties for Fourth in East Coast Conference Preseason Poll

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2018) – Following a season in which the Queens College baseball team just missed the four-team East Coast Conference Tournament, the Knights were picked to be fighting for an ECC tourney berth once again as the conference released its 2018 preseason poll on Thursday (Jan. 25).

QC was slotted in a tie for fourth in the conference preseason ledger, earning 24 points to grab a share of the final postseason position with Bridgeport. Two-time defending ECC regular-season champions St. Thomas Aquinas earned all seven first-place votes in the tally to claim the top spot in the poll with reigning ECC Tournament champions LIU Post collected the second-place billing. Molloy was ranked third ahead of Bridgeport and Queens, with conference newcomer NYIT and Mercy rounding out the seven-team rankings.

Returning for Chris Reardon's club this season will be infielder Jonathan Temenak, who was named to the 2017 Axcess Baseball All-Long Island College team following a stellar hitting performance for the Knights. The senior from Iowa led the team in batting average (.310) and hits (36) while driving in 19 runs batted in for Queens. Temenak drew 21 walks and collected an on-base percentage of .413 as well. Sophomore pitcher Rob Backus is also a returner for the Knights; as a freshman, Backus pitched in eleven games with a 4-0 record and two saves while posting a 4.64 earned-run average.

The Knights will start the year in Myrtle Beach for a four-game, three-day trip that includes contests with Le Moyne and Franklin Pierce (Feb. 23), New Haven (Feb. 24) and Stonehill (Feb. 25). QC's home-opening contest is scheduled for Mar. 6 against Southern Connecticut State after which the Knights will head to West Virginia for a three-game set with Shepherd University on Mar. 10-11. A series with Assumption from Mar. 17-18 follows a midweek battle with Bloomfield at home on Mar. 14 and the Knights open conference play against STAC on Mar. 23-25 with a four-game set. The weekends from there are all about conference play with four-game sets versus Molloy (Mar. 30-Apr. 2), LIU Post (Apr. 6-8) and Mercy (Apr 13-15) giving Queens early tests to surround non-conference midweek fights with East Stroudsburg, Dominican and Caldwell. QC closes the year with conference opponents Bridgeport (Apr. 27-29) and NYIT (May 4-6) with the Sunday game against the Bears being the final regular-season contest of the year.
