CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher Rob Backus of the Queens College baseball team was selected as the East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Week on Monday following his impressive performance on the mound in the Knights' 4-2 win at Mercy College on Sunday.
Backus improved to 4-0 on the season after throwing eight strong innings in the win over the Mercy. He gave up just two runs on six hits, while striking out six, as the Knights won the season series with the Mavericks.
The right-hander has been a key member of the Queens pitching staff, both as a starter and reliever, in his first season with the Knights. He is 4-0 with two saves over 10 appearances on the season, including a pair of starts. Backus owns a 4.35 ERA and has accumulated 19 strikeouts over 31.0 innings this season.
Junior Karl Klesin was also honored by the ECC, landing on the weekly honor roll. He batted .467 over five games for the Knights this past week, while slugging .667. He accounted for three doubles, three stolen bases, two runs and a walk on the week, as Queens went 2-3. In the Knights' two wins, Klesin went 4-for-8 with two doubles and a run.
Queens will pay a visit to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, April 25, for a 3:30 p.m. ECC tilt.
