Broderick Brilliant Again as Baseball Splits with STAC

RAMAPO, N.Y. – Senior right-hander Joseph Broderick was brilliant once again on the mound on Saturday, leading the Queens College baseball team to a split with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) in East Coast Conference (ECC) action. The Knights shut out the Spartans in game one, 5-0, before STAC came alive for a 15-4 win in game two.

Queens 5, STAC 0
Broderick (3-2) tossed eight scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and two walks, while collecting eight strikeouts. He had a no-hitter going through his first 5.1 innings of work. Fellow senior left-hander Yakov Trukhin entered in the ninth to finish off the shutout for the Knights.

Queens did all of its damage offensively in the third inning. Sophomore Joel Mendez led off the inning with a single to center field before junior Thomas Parish was hit by a pitch. Three batters later, junior Joseph Pidoto was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Mendez for the game's first run.

Senior Joe Morris then drew a walk with the bases still full, scoring Parish to give Queens a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Nick Luciano then drove in junior Jonathan Temenak with an RBI single to right field. After a pitching change, junior Billy Riches ripped a two-run single to center to score Morris and Pidoto, as the Knights went up by five.

That was all Queens needed, as Broderick and Trukhin kept STAC in check. Parish went 2-for-3 from the top of the lineup to lead the Knights, while Morris went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.

STAC 15, Queens 4 (F/7)
The Spartans' bats came alive in the second game, piling up 15 runs on 14 hits. Queens took an early lead, but STAC got runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to take complete control.

Senior Ryan Bender gave Queens a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with an RBI single to right center, scoring Morris. STAC then answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to gain the lead. The Knights quickly tied it up in the top of the third, as Morris drove home senior Karl Klesin with a single to right.

STAC opened things up in bottom of the third, however, scoring six runs in the inning to take an 8-2 lead. The Spartans weren't finished just yet, bringing five more runs across the plate in the fourth and another pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Joseph Pena and Mark Shkrelja led STAC at the top of the lineup, combinging for six RBI and four hits, while Anthony Maisano added three RBI as well. For Queens, Morris went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and Temenak went 2-for-4.
