Season ending split with Mercy for Knights

The Knights brought the curtain down on the 2009 season by splitting a doubleheader with Mercy College on Saturday in Flushing. The visitors held on for a 10-8 win in game one while William Marte pitched QC to a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Mercy jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opener before the Knights hung five on the scoreboard in the third to take a one run lead. The lead didn't last long as Mercy scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to move ahead, 10-5. QC made it close with one in the sixth and two in the bottom of the ninth but fell short, 10-8. Noel Gerena, Jr. had a home run and five RBIs and Jared Stoler singled twice and drove in two to pace the Knights attack.
The second game started like its predecesor with Mercy opening up a 3-0 lead. Once again QC answered back, scoring once in the fifth and three times in the sixth and, this time, QC made the lead stand up to pick up the 4-3 victory. William Marte was the winner for the Knights, tossing a complete game while surrendering just one earned run and fanning six along the way. Jason Espinal knocked in two runs for QC.
