FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 22, 2018) - The Queens College Department of Athletics will reduce its total sports sponsorship as of July 1, 2018 with the discontinuation of the men's swimming and diving and women's fencing programs, reducing the number of teams from 19 to 17.
The decision, which reflects decreased participation in those areas, will allow the program to become better aligned with its peers in the East Coast Conference while positioning the department towards greater success in the future. Queens College has the only NCAA Division II Athletics program in the City University of New York.
"This is by no means an easy decision," stated Interim Director of Athletics Rob Twible. "However, it is a move that the department is making after extensive and careful deliberation. The reality is that reducing the number of varsity athletic programs will allow us to better enhance the remaining teams at Queens College. Furthermore, the Department of Athletics will ensure that student-athletes and coaches impacted by this decision are provided with the support they may need during this transition."
Queens College will provide affected student-athletes with full permission to contact any other schools for the purposes of transferring. Affected student-athletes are being afforded all opportunities to pursue other intercollegiate athletic interests. Members of the athletics administration are available to discuss transfer information as well as provide academic advisement to affected student-athletes. Staff from Queens College's Counseling Services will also be available for additional assistance.
