Aquatics Center
The Queens College Aquatics Department provides two programs. The first program is Recreational Swim. This is offered to anyone who wishes to partake in lap swimming. The pool is divided into 4 lanes for Slow, Medium, Fast and Freestyle only. Certified lifeguards are always on the pool deck, and use of the diving board is prohibited during Recreational Swim Hours. The pool hours change every four months, so for up to date hours please call the Aquatics Department at (718) 997-2767. For pool membership, please call Recreation at (718) 997-2777.
Queens College also offers a Red Cross certified, "Learn to Swim" program with eight levels. All swim classes are taught by certified Red Cross lifeguards as well as Water Safety Instructors. The Swim Program accepts potential swimmers who are as young as age four. Four and Five year olds begin our program with Tiny Tots. Tiny Tots takes place in the shallow end on elevated platforms allowing for the perfect depth for water exploration!
Level's 1 and 2 focus heavily on the dynamics of freestyle and backstroke. While these two levels appear to have the same lessons plans, the swimmer must be able to perform all skills by the end of level two on their own. Level 3 is the first time the class takes place in the deep end. In level 3, the child is introduced to the "odd" strokes - breaststroke and butterfly - as well as the art of diving!
Level 4 through level 6 takes the child to the far side of the pool, where the goal is now endurance. The child takes the skills from the past four levels and applies them to working on "going the distance"! Diving, Flip Turns and Open turns are all taught to a larger degree. Once the child perfects his or her strokes, they then move on to the Competitive Swim Program, which teaches the child the importance of pool etiquette while also giving them a good work out.
For adults who wish to learn how to swim or who wish to perfect and maintain their swimming skills, Queens College offers a fantastic adult swim program. With semi privates and regular classes, there is something for everyone! For more questions on our swim program or to receive a brochure for upcoming classes, please call the Aquatics Department at (718) 997 - 2767.
Class offerings, dates and times can be found in our Community Recreation Brochure.
