Ice Hockey 78-79

Long gone are the days when student-athletes laced up their skates and donned their helmets before heading on the ice rink for Queens College. That does nothing to erase the lasting image and legacy of the Knights’ 1978-79 varsity ice hockey team.

Under head coach Scott Cohen, Queens College won consecutive Metropolitan College Hockey Conference Championships in 1978-79 and 1979-80. The team joined St. Francis College and Fairfield University as the only institutions to accomplish the feat, and if not for Upsala College defeating them in finals of the 1980-81 season, the Knights could have earned a third title.

Eric Mann, a 2014 QC Hall of Fame Inductee, was the star of those two championship teams. Mann led the conference in scoring during the 1978-79 season, and went on to break the MCHC record for number of goals in a season with 53 goals in 1981-82. Now his teammates and his head coach have joined him in the QC Athletics Hall of Fame.

The entire 1978-79 varsity ice hockey team was bestowed with “Team of Distinction” honors and Coach Cohen received individual recognition at the fourth annual Queens College Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony in October 2015.
